Let’s Talk About Our Pizzas

If you’re new to Detroit-style pizza, one of the first things you might wonder is what size are they actually?

At The Pan Yard, we have two sizes:

Detroit Square — 7 × 7 inches
Our Detroit Square is 7 × 7 inches and is our smaller option.

But don’t let the measurements fool you. Detroit-style pizza is quite different from a traditional thin or standard base pizza. Our dough is thick and fluffy, and we load them up with toppings and cheese, so they’re surprisingly filling.

The Square can be a great option for one person, but it can also be shared between two depending on appetite.

Me and Wayne often share one and can just about manage two slices each — so they really do fill you up!

Detroit Share — 9 × 13 inches
Then we have our Detroit Share, which is 9 × 13 inches.

This is the bigger one and, as the name suggests, it's the one to go for when you're looking to share.

With the extra size comes more slices, more toppings and, of course, more of that lovely Detroit-style pizza.

Whether you're having a Square to yourself, sharing one between two, or going for the bigger Share for everyone to tuck into, both are made in exactly the same way.

Why are our pizzas cut before cooking?

Something else that's a little different about our pizzas is that we cut them before they go into the oven.

Why?

Because once all that cheese and topping is cooked and melted, cutting through the pizza afterwards can drag everything along with the knife. Nobody wants to open the box to find the toppings have been moved around and the pizza doesn't look quite as neat as it should be.

By portioning and cutting the pizza before it goes into the oven, we avoid having to cut through all those delicious toppings once they're cooked.

It also means that when you open the lid, the pizza looks much more presentable — the slices are already portioned and the toppings stay where they should be.

It's a small detail, but it's part of how we prepare our pizzas at The Pan Yard, because we want them to look as good as they taste.

So there you have it — 7 × 7 for the Detroit Square, 9 × 13 for the Detroit Share, and whichever one you choose, don't underestimate just how filling a Detroit-style pizza can be.
